New Build: Nova “Lava Flow”

Here is our latest “Nova” build. We’re calling this one the “Lava Flow” as the figured Bubinga underneath the Ebony almost glows in the sunlight!

This build is the definition of “happy accident”. The original idea was to have a nice but simple all wood build using an Ebony top and Bubinga base. Our planer had other ideas though, and decided to eat the Ebony and shatter it into several pieces. Not to be deterred though, we adapted and decided to set the pieces onto the Bubinga base with clear resin. It ended up giving a really cool effect and we couldn’t be happier with the end result!

We paired the body with an asymmetrical profile neck made from Black Palm, with an Ebony bound Poinsonwood fretboard. The build is a multiscale with a 27″ bass side and a 25.5″ treble.

The pickups are a pair of our signature Blackwolf Neodymium humbuckers from https://www.oilcitypickups.co.uk/. We used ABM hardware for the bridge and Schaller tuners. Providing great tuning stability across the board.

New Model: The Ikara

Hey everyone!

New model day today, introducing the Ikara! This one came out of trying to update an old shape and it gradually morphed into an entirely new one! This model is super comfy to play and really hugs your body.

This is also the first public debut of Oil City pickups Neodymium pickups. These things sound incredible! Outstanding clarity on both clean and distorted channels. Here is a quote from the builder of the pickups.

The Oil City BlackWolf Neodymium is the first of a whole new breed of passive pickups. For years now pickup makers have struggled to harness the obvious advantages of Neodymium’s amazing bass end tightness and instant tracking combined with brutal power, but have constantly run across the issues of uncontrollable top end and vicious string pull that dampens sustain.

After lots of lateral thinking and prototype testing, I came up with the unique ‘T F R’ (tuned field response) magnet array that powers the Oil City BlackWolf Neo. This magnet array allows the clear note separation and huge power, without excessive string pull or ice pick treble. The pickup is remarkably quiet and free from feedback issues due an internal structure with no large air gaps, and is as ‘at home’ in six or seven string variants. Acoustic like clean tones and searing drive are easily available, with tracking and bass response that exceeds that of ceramic magnet pickups.

I believe the Oil City BlackWolf Neo is the most ground-breaking design I’ve ever produced, and perfect as the power-house for Mike at Stonewolf’s ground-breaking guitar designs.<blockquote\>

We love this new design and have a second one already complete, keep your eyes peeled for that coming in the next week or two!

New Model: The Hammerhead

Hello everyone!

Here is our new EX style model, the “Hammerhead”. We built this model out of popular demand for a stock version of the custom commissioned Æsc model we built in 2016. The shape is based loosely on our old Inferno V2 model but with much more exaggerated lines and size.

We’ve been fans of EX style guitars for a long time so it’s great to finally have one on the stock roster! Looking forward to building more of these in the future!

This particular build has a stunning Olivewood and blue resin hybrid top that we oriented in a way that accentuates the shape of the guitar. We loaded this build with our signature Blackwolf models from Oil City Pickups®, Schaller® locking tuners and Hipshot® mono-saddles.

This is our latest Nova build. We made this one to be a fan-fret 7 string with a micarta top, made from resin and denim fabric. This was a bit of an experiment but it came out much better than we could have hoped.

The micarta method retains the strength of the resin with the flexibility of the cloth, making this a very durable and strong material. We’ll be experimenting with other colours and fabrics as time goes on. We think this has a lot of potential for creating some interesting aesthetics.

We loaded this Nova with a set of our custom Oil City pickups, Schaller tuners and Hipshot mono-saddle bridge pieces.

Out of the Workshop: Buckeye Syrtis

Hello Everyone!

To kick off 2018, we have a new Syrtis build for you! This one really shows off the potential of the resin channel body construction.

We had a small block of Buckeye Burl, that usually would have been far too small to use for a guitar, however, with the resin channel body, we can adjust the orientation of the channels to accommodate for the size of the available wood. It gives an interesting design and illustrates how versatile the resin channel can be.

For the centre section, we used a Walnut laminate with an Ebony top. The contrast with the Buckeye wings makes for a very striking aesthetic. The neck is made from highly figured Poisonwood with a Purpleheart Middle layer and a Pale Moon Ebony fretboard.

The build has ABM® bridge saddles and Schaller® M6 Locking tuners. As a centrepiece we have a set of custom built Oil City Pickups®. These were fully customised for this build, featuring completely transparent bobbins! They sounds incredible and really set the build off beautifully!

New Model: The Syrtis

Hello everyone!

We have a stunning new model to show off to you all. The Syrtis is coming in as a replacement for our now discontinued Huntsman model.

The Syrtis brings with it a host of new customisation options, the first of these being the addition of multi-scale options with all our models.

Multi-scale guitars can offer a marked increase in comfort and playability, especially to those playing extended range or baritone guitars. We’re happy to say we’re able to offer all manner of multi-scale options with our builds.

The Syrtis also features a new “resin channel” body construction. This means the body’s wings are connected to the central section via clear resin channels. Not only does this give a unique look but, offers a huge amount of potential customisation. The resin channels can be cast in any shape or orientation, giving virtually limitless possibilities.

We loaded this one with a pair of Bare Knuckle Pickups®Painkillers, ABM® Single Saddle Bridges & Graphtech® Ratio tuners and TUSQ nut.
