Æsc 7

The Æsc 7 is a one-of-a-kind heavy metal guitar based on the explorer shape made for Stone Wolf Guitars endorsing artist Laird Logan, the Scot of mediæval death metal outfit Hærken. Initially he was just looking for an Explorer style build with a single pickup and an Evertune® bridge.

During the build things got a bit more complex……We decided to leave the guitar fretless from the 15th onwards. This gave him the option to use a capo on the 15th and create some interesting, almost lute like, tones. Laird Logan was a great person to build for as he wanted almost the opposite from his guitar to 90% of other guitarists. He wanted it to weight as much as possible and have high action. His bottom string is a 0.090 gauge so we had to drill out the machinehead and saddle to get it to fit.

The look and materials of the guitar also were very customised. The theme of the guitar was built around the band’s logo, the Ash tree. This meant a body made from Ash, with a Spalted Ash top. Custom fretboard inlay showing the “Æ” symbol and a truss rod cover to match Laird Logan’s tattoo.

I think it’s safe to say he couldn’t have found anything like this “off the peg” and it was an absolute pleasure to build this beast for him.
